Static Reports or Dynamic Reporting

Large quantities of data can be overwhelming, when you are trying to analyse it all, because you want better business decisions. This blog discusses a smarter way to analyse your data without needing the IT experts every time.
How many reports do you normally use, or need? To analyse every possible permutation, is it 24 or 48 or 480 different reports? This is unmanageable. When you want a new report, do you need the IT people to create it, and wait for how long?
When you specify the requirements for your report, they are right for the present.
But what will you want in the future? If you need new parameters next week, it means a new report.
What if you could control the reporting views you require, control them yourself without needing IT experts? That’s efficient and time saving – and exciting.
The trouble with normal reports is that they are static. Once a report is set up, you can’t change its basic structure. In many cases that is suitable, e.g. for monthly and statutory reporting. If you want to dig into your data for analysis, this becomes more difficult. Maybe you can just anticipate every question you will ever have and prepare a report for each scenario – and not use most of them again, and how many reports is it feasible to keep? It would be impossible.
There is another way. Instead of static reporting, with multiple reports, use DYNAMIC REPORTING with a single data cube, or just a few. With a core of data, you control how you view it, adding, filtering, changing what you show.
Instead of, say, 48 reports you have one cube where you change the view.
It’s similar to a 3D spreadsheet with pivot tables but backed up by computing power to do the processing behind the scenes and, unlike a spreadsheet, no worrying about formulae, or whether you captured the correct rows and cells. With dynamic reporting, when you analyse total sales results, you can add itemisations – by territory, and product or customer, that’s just a start. Adding and removing dimensions as required needs a quick mouse stroke, not a new report.
This is dynamic reporting: change the permutations and in that instant, the results are there. It’s immediate.
